A hands-on operational training guide for security guards covering fire classification, extinguisher selection, the PASS technique, and high-rise evacuation protocols.
Fire safety is one of the most critical operational responsibilities assigned to security guards. In commercial buildings, industrial plants, hospitals, and residential complexes, security personnel are almost always the first responders on the scene when a fire emergency occurs. A well-trained security guard who knows how to operate fire extinguishers, read fire alarm panels, and manage evacuations can prevent catastrophic property damage and save human lives within the crucial first 3 minutes of an outbreak. This practical training manual provides a comprehensive operational guide for security personnel covering fire classification, extinguisher selection, the universal PASS operating technique, and emergency evacuation management. Module 1: Understanding Fire Classes & Extinguisher Selection Using the wrong fire extinguisher on a fire can severely worsen the hazard — for instance, spraying water on an electrical or oil fire can cause violent explosions or lethal electrocution. Security guards must memorize the classes of fire and matching extinguisher types: Figure 1.2: Official color code bands and fire class compatibility chart for security staff. Class B (Flammable Liquids): Petrol, diesel, paints, solvents, and oil. Use Foam (Cream Label) , CO2 (Black Label) , or ABC Dry Powder . Never use water. Class C (Flammable Gases): LPG, CNG, methane, and acetylene. Use ABC Dry Powder . Shut off gas supply valve immediately. Electrical Fires (Class E / Live Equipment): Server rooms, DB boxes, transformers, and electrical panels. Use CO2 (Black Label) or Clean Agent / Dry Powder . Never use water or foam. Class F / K (Kitchen Oils & Fats): Deep fryers and commercial kitchen oil fires. Use Wet Chemical (Yellow Label) . Module 2: The PASS Ope...
